How to Choose Your First Custom Lightsaber

Your First Saber Doesn't Have to Be Complicated
Custom lightsabers have come a long way. Today you can get a screen-accurate, pixel-blade saber with smooth-swing sound effects for a fraction of what it cost just a few years ago. But with so many options — blade types, soundboards, hilt styles, tiers — it's easy to feel lost before you even start.
This guide will walk you through every decision so you can order your first saber with confidence.
Step 1: Set Your Budget
Custom sabers range from entry-level to premium collector pieces. Here's a rough breakdown of what to expect at each price point:
- Entry level: Baselit (single LED) sabers — bright, durable, great for dueling and gifting
- Mid range: Xenopixel (pixel blade) sabers — movie-accurate ignition and clash effects, no technical setup required
- Premium: Proffie (open-source) sabers — fully configurable, deepest customization available but does require coding knowledge and flashing the board itself.
If you're unsure, start in the mid range. Xenopixel/SN Pixel sabers deliver a dramatic upgrade over entry-level without requiring any technical knowledge.
Step 2: Pick Your Blade Type
There are two main blade technologies in custom sabers:
- Baselit blade: A single LED at the hilt illuminates the whole blade. Bright, tough, and ideal for combat. Less realistic ignition effect.
- Pixel blade: Dozens of individual LEDs run the full length of the blade, creating a realistic tip-to-base ignition, retraction, and clash effect. More visually impressive; slightly more delicate.
If display and aesthetics matter to you, go pixel. If you plan to duel hard and often, baselit holds up better to heavy contact.
Step 3: Choose a Soundboard
The soundboard (or "core") controls your saber's sounds, motion sensitivity, and customization options. We build on three platforms:
- Baselit / Nexus: Pre-loaded font, simple controls, zero setup.
- Xenopixel / TXQ: Swappable sound fonts via SD card, smooth-swing, blaster deflect, lockup.
- Proffie : Open-source, fully configurable, community font support.
Step 4: Pick a Hilt Style
Your hilt is the most personal part of your saber. Think about:
- Character inspiration: Are you drawn to a specific Jedi or Sith aesthetic? Sleek and minimal, or aggressive and angular?
- Grip comfort: Some hilts have textured grips or emitter guards; others are smooth. Consider how you'll hold it.
- Weight and balance: Heavier hilts feel more substantial but can fatigue your wrist during extended dueling.
Step 5: Consider Accessories and Bundles
A few extras can make a big difference in your experience:
- Spare blades: Keep a dueling blade and a display blade so you don't wear out your pixel blade in combat.
- Blade plugs: Protect the LED emitter when the blade is removed.
- Charging cables and batteries: Make sure you have the right charger for your board.
